Pop/Folk. " Dans les années 90 j’étais chanteur leader et co-auteur du groupe Unbelievable Truth, basé à Oxford. En 1998 sortait un premier album “Almost Here” sous label Virgin, puis “Sorrythankyou” en 2000 sous label Shifty Disco. Cette même année je quittai le groupe, me jurant de ne plus jamais m’occuper de musique… Mais cinq années plus tard, passées à suivre une toute autre carrière, j’avais néanmoins des cahiers pleins de chansons, écrites durant ce laps de temps. Je composais d’abord la musique pour le plaisir, mais pour la première fois j’étais seul responsable de l’écriture du début à la fin, ce qui était libérateur. Les choses qui m’avaient semblé compliquées devenaient désormais simples. Beaucoup de chansons de l’album relatent ce vécu sous différentes formes."

MARIANNE DISSARD (La Pop Muzik/Fr)
Pop. Installée à Tucson (Arizona) depuis une quinzaine d'année, la française MARIANNE DISSARD est rentrée en contact avec Howe Gelb et ses musiciens en réalisant un documentaire sur Giant Sand. En 2000, elle inspire le fameux "Battle Of Cable Hogue" qui reste l'unique vrai tube de Calexico, sur lequel elle chante aux côtés de Joey Burns. Plus tard, celui la pousse à enregistrer son premier album, qu'il produit et dont il compose l'essentiel des musiques, tandis que Naïm Amor (ex Amor-Belhom Duo) en compose 3 autres. Notons qu'un clip a été tourné à Tuscon avec parmi les acteurs improvisés, quelques nantais égarés en Arizona (Dominique A, Katerine, les French Cowboys...). Ce premier disque s'appelle "L'entredeux", il parait en France le 20 octobre, et Marianne fait une étape à la Flèche d'Or au milieu d'une tournée européenne qui la mène en Allemagne, en Suisse, en Belgique et en Italie...

AUDREY RYAN (Folkwit Records/Us)
Pop/Folk. I grew up on an island off the coast of Maine called Mount Desert Island. My home was very musical one and my dad played guitar and my mom sang and played piano in the living room and the organ at church. My dad was into the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and John Fahey, but the songs he played were more of a country-western nature and I remember him singing "hey good lookin' whatcha got cookin'" in our kitchen as my mom made dinner. Mom would play ragtime Scott Joplin tunes and sing ballads like "Blue Boyou" by Roy Orbison. Reluctantly at first, I learned to play guitar starting around age ten and through middle and high school learned a lot of folk tunes to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, John Fahey, and Dylan. In case you're wondering more about what kind of music this is, it started out in the jazz/pop vein and has evolved into an eclectic form of experimental folk, singer-songwriter indie rock of some alien breed using backwards loops, finger pianos, and other unique instrmentation. Overall this music blends together my early influences of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan with contemporaries such as Robert Wyatt, Radiohead, the Flaming Lips, Wilco, Steroelab, Beck, and Arcade Fire.

POLITE SLEEPER (Sabotage/Us)
Folk / Punk / Minimaliste. Pretty simple overall: keep the songs pretty and the shows sweaty, but remember to laugh, respect and practice the tougher scales. We're doin more with less these days and still remember when just the opposite took us to some crazy ass places. We like self-improvement and new sounds. We like a good hook and whiskey chasers. But most important, we're still a punk band. We record in our living rooms and kitchens, exclusively. We keep the traffic noise and dead notes as reminders of that. We give each other high-fives when it feels right and stress when it all falls apart. It's as authentic as we do and that's plenty good for now.
